Against the backdrop of major national strategies, including China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, the building of a strong maritime nation, and new infrastructure development, Tianjin University of Technology established the Institute of Ocean Energy and Intelligent Construction in March 2022. The Institute was founded to advance frontier technologies in ocean energy and intelligent construction, lead scientific and technological progress in related industries, cultivate high-level innovative professionals, and promote interdisciplinary integration and innovation-driven development.

     After three years of rapid growth, the Institute has developed a comprehensive talent cultivation system covering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education. It has established distinctive research areas, including the efficient development of ocean clean energy, intelligent construction and smart operation & maintenance, smart and green development of ports & waterways, as well as the construction of happy rivers & lakes and smart water management. The Institute has undertaken more than 20 national-level, provincial and ministerial-level, and major industry-commissioned projects, with total contracted research funding reaching RMB 150 million. It is also home to a Tianjin Municipal Key Laboratory, multiple scientific and technological innovation platforms, and field demonstration bases.

     To further optimize its disciplinary and academic structure, strengthen interdisciplinary integration in the field of ocean energy, and enhance distinctive disciplinary development, the School of Ocean Energy was established in July 2025 on the foundation of the original Institute. The School consists of two departments: the Department of Intelligent Construction Engineering and the Department of Clean Energy Engineering。

    The School has built a well-structured and highly competitive faculty team, currently consisting of 38 full-time faculty members, 8 distinguished adjunct professors, 3 postdoctoral fellows, and over 20 industry mentors. The team includes 1 Distinguished Professor of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 3 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars.
